Mind's Workplace Wellbeing Awards

May 01, 2019

In some incredibly exciting Tonic Towers news, Mediatonic has been awarded ‘Silver’ in Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Index!

Mental wellbeing and awareness is something we’ve always taken extremely seriously, but sometimes struggled to find actionable and practical solutions to incorporate into the way we work here at Mediatonic. In the past few years as we’ve continued to grow, we wanted to find a way to take on proper responsibility towards improving our practices, so that we could create a more uniform and standardised support system for our team. And so, last year, we took part in Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Index as an official first step and also so that we could assess our current practices.

Mind is a mental health charity that provides advice and support to companies like us in order to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems. Each year they hold their Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Index, which is a benchmark of best policy and practice, celebrating the good work employers are doing to promote and support positive mental health, and providing key recommendations on the specific areas where there is room to improve.

Really proud to represent the MT team last night at the awards (even got a haircut at lunch, that’s when you know it’s serious)

It was specifically their ability to provide specific insight into key areas and provide practical guidance on improvement that really excited us. Over the years we’ve taken steps to widen awareness, remove stigma and improve the quality of work/life balance, like:

  • Opening discussion about mental wellbeing through studio-wide chats from our founders, HR managers and internal mental health awareness champions
  • Encouraging honesty and openness about mental health at all levels of the company, with all management signed up to the process
  • Partnering with Health Assured, which provides complimentary access to a Personal Assistance Programme with 24 hour support through a confidential helpline on a variety of areas across physical and emotional health across work and home environments
  • Being flexible, human, and individualised where people need it
  • Proactive and rigorous production planning to avoid crunch and overtime on our projects

We were confident these policies would help our team, but from the inside it was difficult to tell how useful they were and if there were other areas where there might be gaps. By participating in Mind’s Workplace Wellbeing Index we’d be able to get an outside perspective and proper analysis for the whole studio and across our different teams and disciplines.

Participating meant surveying all our Tonic Team across London, Brighton and Madrid, as well as filling out a bunch of employer surveys to define what MT is currently doing to positively affect mental health in the studio. An absolutely huge thanks to all the Tonics that took the time to respond to the staff survey. Not only does this work help put us on the path towards more positive ways to support mental health, but it also contributes to Mind's wider research on workplace wellbeing.

We’re thrilled to have been awarded a Silver, which by Mind’s definition means we've made demonstrable achievements in providing staff mental health, have taken action across a number of key areas they look into and have demonstrated progress and impact over time.

But this is just the start to improving the mental wellbeing here at MT. Over the coming months we'll be investigating how the assessment can guide us towards improvements we can make here at Tonic Towers for the amazing people it houses. The games industry is not typically known for being the most stress-free environment, but by participating in Mind's Workplace Wellbeing Index, we've made a long-term commitment to finding ways to make our environment and practices more supportive to mental wellbeing.
